The Big and Small of living tiny

One of the latest trends in Australian homes is downsizing, so let’s take a look at some of the realities of living tiny.

One of the biggest plus sides to living tiny is the financial freedom provided. Being able to afford your own portable home offers freedom and alternative to suburban living, with a seemingly never-ending mortgage. But, are you ready to live in a small space?

A reality of tiny living is that you are living in a small space, which suits some people entirely. Others find the experience slightly claustrophobic. The difference between a positive tiny living experience and one that is not so good is design.

How to stop the walls closing in.

If you want to go tiny, but find the size of the homes a little claustrophobic, choose a home with big windows, light interiors and build an outdoor living area. Make sure that there are separate living spaces so that you can have your own space, perhaps your bedroom may have a closable door so that you can watch television alone while other members of the household are in the living area.

Where are you going to put all your stuff?

Over time we accumulate a lot of ‘stuff’ – furniture, clothes, toys, books – the list goes on. Before you decide to go tiny, take some time to work out what is important to you, and prioritise your ‘stuff’ accordingly. Don’t be wasteful when you are downsizing - share your unwanted goods around with friends, family or local charities. Think about how long tiny living will suit you and your family. Is it short or long term? If it is shorter-term, storage could be an option.
